Not every result is the one you hoped for — and not every change requires a knife. At Vue Medical Spa in Salt Lake City, two corrective injectables let us fine-tune your face and profile without surgery: hyaluronidase (Hylenex) to dissolve hyaluronic-acid filler, and Kybella (deoxycholic acid) to reduce fat beneath the chin. Both are performed under the direction of board-certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. Randal Swenson, so every correction is guided by a deep understanding of facial anatomy.
Hylenex recombinant is a form of hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid. Per its FDA labeling, hyaluronidase modifies the permeability of connective tissue through the hydrolysis of hyaluronic acid — it splits the bonds that hold the HA molecule together. Because most modern dermal fillers (Juvéderm, Restylane, and similar) are made of hyaluronic acid, a precisely placed injection of hyaluronidase can dissolve that filler and let the tissue settle back toward its natural state.
When it's used. We recommend filler dissolving when HA filler has been placed too heavily, has migrated beyond where it belongs, looks lumpy or uneven, or simply no longer suits you. It's also part of how a medical practice manages the rare, urgent complications that can follow filler injection — another reason to have corrective care available in a physician-led setting.
What it does not do. Hyaluronidase works only on hyaluronic-acid products. It will not dissolve non-HA injectables such as Sculptra (poly-L-lactic acid) or Radiesse (calcium hydroxylapatite), because those aren't made of hyaluronic acid. Kybella is a prescription injectable made of deoxycholic acid, a molecule that helps the body break down dietary fat. It is FDA-approved to improve the appearance of moderate-to-severe fullness associated with submental fat — the “double chin” beneath the jaw — in adults.
How it works. When injected into the fat under the chin, Kybella destroys fat cells through a process called adipocytolysis. Kybella is administered as a series of injections to the treatment area under the chin, destroying fat cells and producing gradual results. Once those cells are destroyed, they can no longer store fat, so the contour improvement builds gradually over the weeks that follow.
What to expect. Treatment is a quick series of small injections during a single office visit. Results appear gradually; patients may receive up to six treatments spaced at least one month apart, with the exact number tailored to your anatomy and goals. Dr. Swenson's team maps each session to the fat pad so the correction reads as a cleaner, more defined jawline — not an overcorrection.
Kybella is FDA-approved only for submental (under-chin) fat, and it's the only area we treat with it.
Both treatments take roughly 45 minutes and require no incisions and no general anesthesia. Some temporary reaction at the injection site is normal and expected.
After filler dissolving, mild swelling, tenderness, or bruising can occur and typically settles within a few days; results are visible quickly as the HA breaks down. After Kybella, the most common effects listed by the manufacturer are swelling, pain, numbness, redness, and areas of hardness in the treatment area — swelling under the chin is expected and eases over the days that follow. We'll give you clear aftercare guidance and stay available between visits.

Because the right amount in the wrong place — or simply too much — can change how you look and feel. Dissolving hyaluronic-acid filler lets us undo an overfilled, migrated, or uneven result and reset the area, so any future filler starts from a clean, natural base.
Hyaluronidase has a long track record in aesthetic and medical use. Its mechanism — hydrolyzing hyaluronic acid — is well understood, and at Vue it's performed by our medical team under surgeon oversight. We'll review your history and what you were treated with beforehand so the correction is precise.
It varies by person. Patients may receive up to six treatments, spaced at least one month apart. Many people need fewer; your provider will recommend a plan based on how much submental fat is present and the result you're after.
The fat cells Kybella destroys can no longer store fat, so the improvement is designed to last. As with any contouring, significant future weight gain can still affect the area, but the treated cells themselves are gone.
No. Hyaluronidase only breaks down hyaluronic-acid fillers. Sculptra (poly-L-lactic acid) and Radiesse (calcium hydroxylapatite) are not hyaluronic acid, so they can't be dissolved this way. We'll confirm what you have before recommending anything.
Both are no-incision, in-office treatments. Expect temporary swelling, tenderness, or bruising — more noticeably under the chin after Kybella — that generally settles over a few days. Most people return to normal activities right away.
