Erbium YAG, on the Alma Harmony XL Pro, is an ablative resurfacing laser — it precisely vaporizes damaged outer layers of skin so smoother, newer skin can surface, while stimulating fresh collagen underneath. It's the stronger choice when you want a more dramatic result and are ready for a little recovery in exchange.
Good outcomes with ablative resurfacing start before the appointment. We'll ask you to stop retinoids and exfoliating acids about a week out, avoid sun exposure and self-tanner, and begin an antiviral if you're prone to cold sores. Come to your appointment with clean skin and no makeup, and arrange a driver if you're having a larger area treated.
Days one and two are the most intense — skin feels hot and tight, much like a strong sunburn, and looks noticeably red. By days three to five the surface begins to flake and peel as new skin arrives underneath. Most people feel comfortable in public around day five to seven, and residual pinkness fades over the following two to three weeks. Occlusive ointment, gentle cleansing, and strict sun protection matter through the entire window — they are the difference between a good result and a pigment problem.
We use numbing and comfort measures; you'll feel heat rather than sharp pain. Erbium YAG achieves more per session than a non-ablative laser, typically in a series of two to three, spaced six to eight weeks apart.
